TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES ZIMBABWE Telecel Vodafone Portugal was founded in 1991 as Telecel, Comunicações Pessoais, S.A. (Telecel) as it won the bid for Portugal's second GSM operator (going against incumbent operator TMN).
Net*One Net*One was the first cellular network operator in Zimbabwe based on the Global System for Mobile Communications. The company was originally launched during the World Solar Summit in September 1996 in the capital Harare with 2000 lines. Service was extended to the second city of Bulawayo at the time of the International Trade Fair in April 1997.
Econet Zimbabwe's principal mobile or cell phone company was established by the Zimbabwean businessman, Strive Masiyiwa. It is now the nation's largest cell phone network having captured 43% of the market share. Econet Wireless also operates networks in Lesotho, Botswana, and Burundi.
