Classic Car

In its distinctive design, features and philosophy, the Boxster RS 60 Spyder echoes the classic motorsport era of the 1960s, and in particular the success of Porsche sports cars during that period.

Alex McDonald
Alex McDonald started Almac Plastics in 1971. But his interest in cars goes back many years to when he was a lad in England and purchased a 90 pound kit car from Gem Marsh before he started Marcos. This was in the early days of kit cars and the Sirocco reflected that in its poor quality and the fact that it was not complete. To complete it Alex had to learn how to fibreglass. His mother regularly complained of the smell that drifted into her kitchen from the garage that was attached to the house and Alex occasionally had fibreglass tasting sandwiches for his lunch. Still this first car was eventually finished. Later he sold the Sirocco for a TVR which was later upgraded for a MG midget. As the MG had no hard top he made one out of fibreglass. This time it was his new Kiwi wife Diana who was complaining about the smell of fibreglass in the kitchen and again his sandwiches tasted funny. Diana and Alex immigrated to New Zealand where Alex started working at the Dunlop Tyre factory in Upper Hutt as a Draughtsman Engineer. Not content with working for somebody else Alex decided to set up a fibreglass business and went back to the skills he had learnt on his mum’s kitchen table.

ASTON Martin
ASTON Martin cars today enjoy an enviable reputation for quality, performance, style and engineering - which puts them at the very pinnacle of the automotive world. For nearly 90 years the company has been shaped by many different owners, all sharing a common passion for power and performance. But the marque's modern ethos has remained constant since it was instilled at the very beginning of the Aston Martin story. Lionel Martin, an early enthusiast of motor racing, set the scene when he laid out his vision for: " A quality car of good performance and appearance: a car for the discerning owner driver with fast touring in mind, designed, developed, engineered and built as an individual." Martin turned his passion into a business in 1913, when he joined forces with Robert Bamford to sell Singer cars - adapting them for the tough up-hill challenges that formed an important part of early motorsport. The partners wanted to manufacture cars of their own - and a name was needed. Martin regularly competed in climbs at Aston Hill - and with the simple combination of a hill and a driver, the Aston Martin legend was born.?In 1914 Bamford & Martin Limited bought premises in Chelsea, London - and the following March, the very first Aston Martin car was registered. Fitted with a Coventry Simplex side-valve engine, built to his own specification, it became known as 'Coal Scuttle'. By 1920 the company was operating from Abingdon Road in Kensington - and motoring pioneer Count Zborowski dug deep into his pockets to fund the construction of two Aston Martin racing cars, which competed in the 1922 French Grand Prix. Now the marque rapidly established its racing credentials. On May 24 that year, an Aston Martin known as 'Bunny' broke ten world records at Brooklands, clocking an average speed of 76.04mph during a sixteen and a half hour run.

Nz Classic Car
My first car was a Morris van modified of course, followed by Fiats, Alfas, Austin Healey, TR6, maturing into Jaguars. I was born in Canterbury and brought up with interesting cars; my father Ran Macdonald was a local farmer who raced salon cars with great enthusiasm in the fifties and sixties. There was always something interesting around the farm to drive whether it was a Mini Cooper or a Falcon GT HO. After being away overseas for 12 years I have returned home to Christchurch and opened Macdonald Classic Cars. I hope to help sellers of unique vehicles by selling them on behalf. Venders take advantage of having their classic presented in a showroom environment as well as having a top marketing program to get the best price for their vehicle.

Toyota New Zealand
The Toyota Motor Co. Ltd was first established in 1937 as a spin-off from Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, one of the world's leading manufacturers of weaving machinery. The Toyoda Automatic Loom Works was then headed by Japan's "King of Inventors" Sakichi Toyoda. The patent rights to one of his machines had been sold to Platt Brothers (UK) and provided the seed-money for the development and test-building of Toyota's first automobiles. August 1997 marked the 60th anniversary of TMC. The fledgling company founded by Kiichiro Toyoda, Sakichi's son, has since blossomed into the leader that it is today. In 1950 the company experienced its one and only strike. Labour and management emerged from this stoppage firmly committed to the principles of mutual trust and dependence, and that corporate philosophy still guides our growth today. Production systems were improved in the late 1950s, culminating in the establishment of the 'Toyota Production System.' It became known as TPS in 1970 but was established much earlier by Taiichi Ohno. Based on the principles of Jidoka, Just-in-time and Kaizen, the system is a major factor in the reduction of inventories and defects in the plants of Toyota and its suppliers, and it underpins all our operations across the World.

Alfa Romeo New Zealand
The much anticipated Mini-Alfa Romeo has been touted by some motoring pundits as a replacement for the much-loved Alfasud, the benchmark small car from the 1970s that redefined small car performance with a class leading chassis, peppy performance and crisp styling. However, the new Alfa Romeo Mi.To is even smaller, with the Alfasud built to compete with cars such as the Volkswagen Golf, making today’s Alfa Romeo 147 its true successor. Additionally, with its five door hatchback and wagon versions, the Alfasud, despite its performance and styling, was designed to compete with mainstream models. The Mi.To, at just over four metres long and 1.72 metres wide, not only sits in the class below the Alfa 147 and is predecessor, it is resolutely a prestige small car that is a performance and style design, intensely focused on the driver, drawing on the iconic styling of the Alfa Romeo 8C and offering a true performance orientated experience.

The Todd Group of businesses has a long and distinguished record of service to New Zealanders, reaching back more than a century. Mazda has always stayed in touch with its buyers and has been a leader in innovation. In 1978 the first generation 12A powered RX-7 took the world by storm, exceeding production expectations and causing traffic jams at the dealerships. The rotary engine had found its true home and Mazda had found the heart of the sports car lover. The RX-7 achieved immediate success with "Car of the Year" awards across the globe and major racing victories at events such as SPA and Daytona. The RX-7 made its own name on the Australian circuit with victory in the Australian touring car championships of 1983 and 84. A 2nd outright at the 1983 Bathurst 1000 during the height of the V8 era proved just how formidable the rotary could be, giving cause to the many traditional racers changing their V8 cars for rotary power.
