DESCRIPTION:La Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social (CCSS), se creó como una institución autónoma el 1 de noviembre de 1941, por ley No. 17, durante la administración del Dr. Rafael Angel Calderón Guardia.. La CCSS se constituyó en una institución destinada a la atención de la salud del sector laboral, financiada mediante un sistema tripartito: Estado – Patrono- Trabajadores. Se basa en cinco principios filosóficos: Obligatoriedad, solidaridad, igualdad, universalidad e unidad. El Hospital Dr. R.A. Calderón Guardia inicia funciones el 1 de noviembre de 1943 con el nombre de Policlínico del Seguro Social. En esta primera etapa sólo se daba servicio de consulta externa, la cual estaba distribuida en cuatro consultorios y contaba con veinte médicos.

DESCRIPTION:En los últimos días ha vuelto a tomar fuerza en este cantón el tema de un nuevo hospital para la comunidad. Tras varias reuniones efectuadas, los miembros de la junta de salud de Turrialba aseguran que el proyecto va muy en serio, e incluso la Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social tiene como prioritario dicho plan. En días pasados, varios funcionarios de la Caja visitaron Turrialba y tras un recorrido por el actual edificio que alberga el hospital llegaron a la conclusión de que es necesaria y con urgencia una nueva infraestructura y en un sitio más adecuado, ya que el nosocomio azucarero se ubica en la actualidad en una colina que hace difícil su acceso.
