IPB's history is interwoven with the history of the city of Bogor. Bogor, a small city near Jakarta, was selected by the Dutch colonial government as the site for the establishment of agricultural research stations. At that time Indonesia was regarded as the main source of primary agricultural products for the Netherlands as well as for much of Europe. With the development of estate crops the need for agricultural technical workers increased. In response to this, the first Junior Level Schools of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary were founded in the late 19th century. The Early History As a result of pressure from the European "Ethic Policy" group in the late 1930's, the Dutch East Indies Government decreed that a system of higher education in Indonesia be established. Bogor was considered a very appropriate location for higher agricultural education, and the Faculty of Agriculture (Faculteit der Landbouw-wetenschappen) was established under the University of Indonesia on September 1, 1940. In 1946, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (Faculteit der Diergeneeskunde) was established. Until the late 1950's, these Faculties were operated under Dutch governance employing Dutch faculty members. Following this period, "Indonesianization" of the Dutch establishment took place and all Dutch faculty members went back to the Netherlands. The gaps created were filled temporarily by faculty members from the University of Kentucky, USA. This was the start of US Government assistance in preparing the two Faculties in higher agricultural education institution building. At the same time hundreds of faculty members were sent to the US for advanced training. In the 1950's there was a call for university graduates, including agricultural graduates, to provide leadership in nation building. In 1961, the basic law for higher education was signed by the first President of Indonesia, with the Tridharma (instruction, research, community service) stated as its core philosophy. A ministry of Higher Education and Sciences was established. Professor Thoyib Hadiwidjaja, a faculty member of the Faculty of Agriculture at IPB was appointed as the first minister. Establishment of IPB Following the enactment of new higher education laws, in 1963, national universities were founded in each of the provinces. In this year, the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine were separated from the University of Indonesia. Besides these two faculties, three other faculties were established, namely the Faculty of Fisheries, the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, and the Faculty of Forestry. These five Faculties constituted a new university establishment called the Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB). In the following year (1964) the Faculty of Agricultural Technology and Mechanization was founded. In December 2000, IPB became autonomous university. This status enables the university to manage all assets for academic excellent as well as for entrepreneurial purpose. This opportunity has been utilized to re-engineer governance, program of information technology, financial and infrastucture management to become effective and efficient in performing research, education and community services.

Although Sanata Dharma began to be recognized as a university in April 1993, its history dates back to 1955 when Catholic Priests, particularly those of the Order of the Society of Jesus in central Java and lay intellectuals decided to found a teacher-training college. By then, the Order had run a one-year diploma course in Education under the de Britto Foundation in Yogyakarta managed by Father H. Loeff, S.J. and in English under the Loyola Foundation in Semarang by Father W.J. van der Meluen, S.J. and Father H. Bastiaanase, S.J. Later, with the support of thr Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, Father Kester, the then Superior of the Jesuit Missionaries, united these courses into a higher learning institution and so was born Sanata Dharma Teacher Training Instititue on October 20, 1955 and was officially inaugurated by the Indonesian government on December 17, 1955. At the onset, Sanata Dharma had 4 departments: Education, English, History, and Natural Sciences. The superior of the Jesuit mission appointed Father Nicolaus Driyarkara, S.J. as the Dean and Father H. Loeff as the Vice Dean. The name “Sanata Dharma” was coined by Father K. Looymans, S.J., who was then an officer in the Department of Education and Culture at the Office of the Indonesian Bishops. “Sanata Dharma” means “the true dedication” or “the real service”. The dedication and the service have been devoted to the nation and the church (Pro Patria et Eclessia)

The main campus of UNIKA is located in the upper part of the city with a temperature slightly milder than downtown. It occupies an area of +10 hectares, surrounded by greenery including the city’s zoological gardens and a greenbelt that protects the downtown are from flooding. The campus is easily reached by taxi, city bus and other means of public transport, but most of the students come to university by motorcycle. The other two campuses are located in the downtown area; one located on Menteri Supeno Street No. 35 and the other on Imam Bonjol Street No. 186 A. Soegijapranata Catholic University was founded on August 5th, 1982 on the decree of the Coordinator of Private Higher Education Coordination, Region VI, Central Java No. 059/K/22/Kop/VII/1982 which was reaffirmed by the decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia dated September 24th, 1983 No. 0400/01/1983. The initial idea to found a Catholic university was started from the Conference of the Catholics in Central Java. There were three reasons why the Catholic scholars and Catholic leaders suggested the idea. The first reason was the demand for higher education in Semarang which was still rare. Secondly, it was due to the great potential of teaching staff to be recruited in the city and the willingness of local business people to give assistance cooperatively. Thirdly, it was the conducive situation which encouraged the need to establish a higher education as a place for the future leaders with a strong religious basic to equal the influence of Communism ideology in the era. The idea to establish a catholic university in Semarang was fully supported by Semarang Catholic figures that consisted of intellectuals, government officials, and businesspersons. Thus, in a meeting in 1964 a decision was made to found Semarang Atma Jaya Indonesian Catholic University. Semarang Atma Jaya Catholic University is a chapter of Atma Jaya Indonesian Catholic University Jakarta but in its operation the university was co-managed by Soegijapranata Foundation. The first faculties that were opened were Faculty of Law and Faculty of Economics. Considering the good interest of the public, the principals of the university thought it important to open exact sciences. With supports from many parties, Faculty of Pharmacy was instituted in1965. A year later, Faculty of Agriculture was opened and in 1967 Faculty of Engineering was established. Yet, since 1970 Atma Jaya Catholic University

All of which is expected to better the service given and augment the image of UII. The first launch is, however, just the onset of rebuilding more comprehensive site, which will certainly take a long time. We are sorry to inform you that you will still find incompleteness and some broken links in this soft launching of our website. Hence, we are certainly looking forward to constructive criticisms so as to improve the quality of the website.

Mercu Buana University (MBU) was founded on June 18, 1985 by a well – kown Indonesian entrepreneur H.Probosutedjo a retired Taman Siswa teacher at Pematang Siantar District, North Sumatra. Its history dated back to November 10, 1981 when he decided to set about an “Academi Wiraswasta Dewantara” ( Dewantara Entrepreneur Academy) which was inaugurated by the late H.Adam Malik, the previous Indonesian Vice President. The name of the academy was taken from the name of the famous Indonesian educator H.Hajar Dewantara. At its initial stage, the mission of the academy was to develop a model of non-degree program that produces independent and pious businessmen or entrepreneurs who aspire to create the job vacancies rather than to look for the vacant position. Before having its own campus, the teaching and learning process were carried out in Indonesian Employment Office (YTKI) on Gatot Subroto Street. Then in 1984, the Menara Bhakti foundation---the foundation that sponsored the academy—built a campus of its own on Meruya Selatan Street, Kebun Jeruk West Jakarta. Having enough experience in managing an academy, the foundation board of trustee appointed Dr.Ir.Sri Edi Swasono as the chairman of the university formation team. Among the members of the team were the late H.Abdul Madjid, the late Drs. Iman Santosa Sukardi, Drs.M.Enoch Markum, Ir.Suharyadi,MS, the late Sukarno, and the late Prijo S.Parwoto. After conducting thorough need analyses and feasibility studies on June 12, 1985, the team proposed a full-pledged of Mercu Buana University to the coordinator of private universities territory III, Jakarta. The coordinator then issued a letter of operational approval No.15 /Kop III/S-VI/85 dated June 18, 1985 signed by the late Prof.Dr.Boesjra Zahir.

On Oktober 18, 1954, Prof. Mr. Muhammad Yamin officially opened Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru Malang (PTPG Malang), or Teacher Education College. The historical event marked the commencement of what now become UM, one of the oldest universities in Indonesia. The newly born institution had 5 departments, with 127 students and 37 lecturers. Prof. Sutan Adam Bachtiar was appointed first rector of PTPG Malang. The founding of another university in East Java, Unair (Universitas Airlangga) on November 10, 1954, brought about some important consequence to the status of PTPG Malang. Since then, PTPG became one of the four faculties of Unair. It was not until four years later that the status change was officially declared, with the issuance of Government Decree No. 71, 1958. Based on the decree, PTPG Malang formally became Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Airlangga University (Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, FKIP-Unair). In 1963, FKIP-Unair converted into an independent institution, namely Institute of Teacher Training and Education (Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan Malang, or better known as IKIP Malang). The emergence of this institution put an end to the previous debates concerning the dualism in the government policy on teacher education in Indonesia. In 1967 it was designated as a Growth Center University by the Director General of Higher Education and in 1968 it opened its first Doctorate Program. The year 1999 marked yet another important change in the institution's status. Based on Presidential Decree No. 93, 1999, IKIP Malang obtained a greater mandate and transformed into UM. Later, referring to the Director-General of Higher Education's Decree No. 143/DIKTI/Kep/2000, five faculties were established: Faculty of Educaton, Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, Faculty of Economics, and Faculty of Engineering. The English Department of UM was once recognized by the Ford Foundation as the best of its kind in South East Asia.
