Middle East Technical University is founded under the name of "Orta Do?u Yüksek Teknoloji Enstitüsü" (Middle East High Technology Institute) on November 15th, 1956 to contribute to the development of Turkey and Middle East countries and especially to train people so as to create a skilled workforce in the fields of natural and social sciences. "Arrangements and Procedures as for the Foundation of METU, Law No 6887" was enacted on January 29th, 1957. Finally, "Foundation Act No 7307", which sets forth the particular standing of METU and describes the conditions rendering METU as a juridical entity, was enacted on May 27th, 1959. Middle East Technical University's presence brought about new methods and introduced innovations to Turkish higher education system manifesting METU as a pioneer of modern education nationwide. In its earliest years, part of METU was located in a small building that belonged Social Security Office of Retirees at Kizilay's Müdafaa Street and the other section was located in the barracks behind the TBMM (Turkey's National Grand Assembly). In 1963, the University moved to its current campus location which is the first university campus of Turkey.

Bilkent University was founded on October 20, 1984 by Ihsan Dogramaci, through the joint resolution of Ihsan Dogramaci Education Foundation, Ihsan Dogramaci Science and Research Foundation and Ihsan Dogramaci Health Foundation. The establishment of this private university was later approved by an act of Parliament. The aim was to create a center of excellence in higher education and research. The name ``Bilkent'' exemplifies the founder's aim, since it is an acronym of ''bilim kenti,'' Turkish for ''city of science and knowledge.'' It had long been an objective of the founder to establish a private university distinguished by its high quality education and research. The founder, himself an academician by profession, had earlier contributed to the establishment of numerous public institutions of higher learning and served as rector of Ankara University, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Middle East Technical University and founder and first rector of Hacettepe University.

Robert College was founded in Istanbul,Turkey, by Dr.Cyrus Hamlin,an educator, inventor, technician, architect and builder, and Mr. Christopher Rheinlander Robert, a well-known philanthropist and a wealthy merchant from New York.

ISTANBUL TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY was established in 1773, during the time of the Ottoman Sultan Mustafa III. With its original name "Muhendishane-i Bahr-i Humayun", The Royal School of Naval Engineering, its responsibility was to educate chart masters and ship builders. In 1795, the "Muhendishane-i Berr-i Humayun", The Royal School of Military Engineering, was established to educate the technical staff in the army. In 1847, education in the field of architecture was also introduced.

Ankara University is a comprehensive public university located in the capital of the nation. Being the first higher education institute of the Republic, it has established a reputable image both within the country and in the international arena, with its vast experience for 50 years, its highly qualified academic staff and students, and its well established teaching, learning and research facilities. Ankara University was founded by Atatürk himself in order to set foundation for his teachings and revolutions on which those would get stronger and spread wider, and for those principles that are the expressions of a modern society, science and enlightenment are hold dear and protected.

The university is located in two major campuses, namely Sihhiye and Beytepe Campuses. Sihhiye (Central) Campus was built in the Hacettepe neighborhood of Ankara.

Ege University as a precursor university in many activities has a 52 year history of long standing. The University is situated in Bornova, which is one of the biggest districts of ?zmir.The university Campus with its 3700 hectare of parkland is composed of many buildings used for educational, cultural, sporting and social purposes. Gazi University is one of the few universities whose history dates back to 1920s. Right after the declaration of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his friends decided to establish an institute. This resulted in the establishment of the 'Teacher Training Institute' in 1926. The Faculty of Agriculture, founded in 1967 by Ankara University, and the Faculty of Medicine, founded in 1972 by Atatürk University, were combined to form Cukurova University in I973. The number of the faculties rose to five when the faculties of Basic Sciences, Administrative Sciences and Engineering were founded. In 1982, the Faculty of Basic Sciences was reorganized as the Faculty of Sciences and Letters, and the Faculty of Administrative Sciences was combined with the Department of Economics and Administrative Sciences forming the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Economics. The Faculty of Engineering and Architecture emerged from the combination of the Faculty of Engineering and the Engineering Department of the Adana Academy of Administrative and Commercial Sciences. Also, the Faculty of Education was established when the two-year Foreign Language Colleges of the Ministry of Education in Adana, Mersin and Hatay were combined.

Under the direction of one of Turkey's leading family-run foundations, the Sabanc? Foundation, the Sabanc? Group established Sabanc? University in July 1994. More than fifty academicians from 22 different countries, students, and individuals from the private sector participated in the conference in August 1995. At the end of the conference, based on the knowledge and experience of the participants, the key philosophy of a "world university" emerged: "creating and developing together." This conference was followed by design committees which worked under the guidance of a "Student Tendency Survey" and other academic program design activities. The groundbreaking ceremony for the Sabanc? University campus took place on July 31, 1997. The University began its first academic year on October 20, 1999.

Dokuz Eylül University was founded on 20 July 1982. Seventeen previously founded institutions of Ege University and other various higher education institutes were affiliated to the University in the same year. History of the University ?nönü University, named after the second President of Turkish Republic, ?smet ?nönü, is one of the leading Institutions in the country. Due to both natural and industrial potential of the region, this University has been among those that are given priority by the government and private sector. Malatya, where our University is located, is a leader for its world-famous apricot fruit. Of the World dry-apricot production, 90 % originates from this region. The city is located at the Upper Firat river basin area of the Eastern Anatolian Region. The area had been inhabited since the Neolithic ages, mainly because of its geographic position at the crossroads of major trade routes; the famous Route of Kings and the Silk Road. It is a busy modern city in a huge fertile region with a major agricultural industry due to its rich water sources. It is a popular base from which Nemrut Dagi, one of the most famous touristic sites in Turkey, is within one day trip. Another interesting day trip is to Eski Malatya (Old Malatya), 12-km north of the modern city, which is a ruined Roman town with remains of some old city walls, mosques and caravanserais.

One of the main characteristics of Istanbul University is its leadership in higher education for centuries. It has played a guiding and influential role in the social and cultural life of our country. We can clearly see this when we trace the line of historical development of the University. Istanbul University, as one of the oldest educational institutions, not only of Turkey, but also of the world, was founded when Mehmet the Conqueror conquered Istanbul. Education began to be available in theological schools ("medrese/madrasah" as they were then called) and, until the end of the 16th century, these schools were instrumental in educating the ruling cadres of the Ottoman society.

In response to Turkey's need for high quality institutions of higher education, the Organ Transplant and Burns Treatment Foundation, which has been in operation since 1980, made the decision to turn its existing complexes into a university. In 1993, procedures were begun to establish Ba?kent University, with the aid of the Haberal Educational Foundation. In accordance with Article 3961 of the Legal Code, the University was officially founded on January 13, 1994. all but the English Language Department and the Department of American Culture and Literature. The English Language Department offers instruction in academic and occupational English, which is a mandatory part of the curriculum. Süleyman Demirel University was established officially on July 11, 1992 as a State University. It is located in the Isparta City at the Mediterranean Region of Turkey. Establishment of our most developed Engineering and Architecture Faculty goes back to 1976 under the name of Isparta State Engineering and Architecture Academy. Collages and Technical High Schools located in Isparta, Burdur, E?irdir and Yalvaç, also became a part of Süleyman Demirel University. Today SDU has 11 Faculties, 12 Collages, 2 Higher Schools and 3 Graduate Schools, 28 Research Center and 4 Departments under Rectored. Many of the academic units are located on its main campus, which is placed on the foot of the hill outside Isparta.

The Gevher Nesibe Medical Faculty, which was opened as an affiliation with Hacettepe University in 1969; and Kayseri Business Administration Faculty, which opened in 1977, constituted an independent university under the name of The University of Kayseri in 1978. In 1982, the other two Higher Education Institutions in Kayseri were incorporated into the same university as Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Theology. Then its name was converted into Erciyes University.

Akdeniz University is a campus university established on approximately 925 acres of land to the west of Antalya city centre between Dumlupinar Boulevard and the Uncal? district. It was founded in 1982, and incorporated the higher education institutions already established in Antalya, Isparta and Burdur. In 1992 the institutions located outside Antalya were transferred to Süleyman Demirel University. There are at present 11 faculties and a conservatory active in the university. There are also 4 vocational schools within the university providing bachelor degree courses, 8 vocational schools established in Antalya and its surrounding districts which offer 2-year courses and 4 graduate schools providing education at master and doctorate levels.

The Faculty of Medicine of Diyarbakir, which was opened in 1966 under the administration of the Faculty of Medicine of Ankara University, forms the nucleus of the present university. By transferring its students to Diyarbakir in 1969, it continued its activities as a faculty of Ankara University and in 1974 with the opening of the Faculty of Science, Diyarbakir University was actively founded.

After spending over forty years in the field of education, next to Ar? Primary School and Ar? High School, an investment in higher education and research as well became inevitable. This endeavour was realized through the collaboration and genuine contribution of all the teaching and administrative staff as well as the thousands of young people who have attended these schools and also their parents. In fact, this was the source of the motivation that led to the establishment of Çankaya University, the last link in our educational project.

Karadeniz Technical University, founded upon the approval of the proposal put forward by Mustafa Re?it Tarakç?o?lu, Trabzon deputy of the time, and his 28 friends on May 20th 1955, is the first university to be founded except for the ones established in ?stanbul and Ankara. Eight years after the foundation, Department of Basic Sciences, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering and Forest Engineering faculties were established in accordance with the article 336, enacted in September 19, 1963.

The ?zmir Institute of Technology (?YTE) is a state university that places emphasis on research and graduate and undergraduate education in fields relevant to science and technology and on interdisciplinary studies. Like its international counterparts such as The Massachussetts Institute of Technology, the Institute adopts the organisational scheme of institutions of advanced education and intensive research oriented toward science and technology. It was founded by central government to be a centre of excellence in science and technology. Do?u? Group of Schools started its educational life as a High School in 1974, with the aim of both educating its students as modern, secular, democratic and freethinking individuals that follow Atatürk’s principles; and supplying them with the awareness and strength to contribute to our economic and cultural development. The nucleus of Sakarya University has been the School of Engineering and Architecture which was opened in 1970. In 1971 the institution was transformed into an Academy. University of Sakarya carried out its curricula under the name of State Architecture and Engineering Academy. Between the years 1982-1992 Sakarya University functioned as a faculty affiliated to ITU. On 3rd July 1992 by Law Number 3837 The University of Sakarya was founded. Among the universities which were established after 1990s, Sakarya University has a unique place with its complete technical infrastructure and number of full time teaching staff. Sakarya University is the only state university that holds a ISO2002 Quality Certificate. With its huge investments in Information Technology, Sakarya University has its contribution to the development and progress of IT sector in Turkey.

Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University was founded in 1992 based upon the Faculty of Education on the Anafartalar Campus. Before this the facilities had housed a Teacher Training Institute, then a branch of Trakya University. With its new status and intake from Turkey's large youth population, the university developed quickly in terms of the number of students, staff and facilities, spurring the opening of new faculties and colleges.

KAHRAMANMARAS SUTCU IMAM UNIVERSITY was founded on July 11th 1992.The university carries out its academic activities in the campus located in the city centre, Karacasu, The Faculty of Medicine, Avsar and Aksu campuses. Karacasu campus has an area of 100 hectares and Avsar campus, which is still under construction, will have an area of 1300 hectares. 266 hectares of this area have been nationalized up to now. There are totally 170 departments and programs in our university ; 45 departments including the second education program in 7 faculties and 12 in higher vocational schools, 93 programs in higher vocational schools, 17 departments in the Institute of Natural Sciences, 9 departments in the Institute of Social Sciences, 6 departments subordinated to the Rectorate.

Ondokuz May?s University is a state university founded in 1975.Today, according to the October 2005 statistics, there are a total of 30,629 (including 260 foreign) students and a total of 1923 academic and 1681 administrative staff members. The university is currently considered to be one of the most significant and large universities of Turkey. Ondokuz May?s University recognises internationalisation as a major mean to improve the quality of education and research through the created interactions and cooperation leading to innovation. ISTANBUL KULTUR UNIVERSITY has a total covered area of 30,000 square metres within six buildings on the Sirinevler Campus: the main building, buildings of the Faculty of Engineering and Archi-tecture, the Faculty of Letters and Science, and buildings of the Faculty of Economics and Administrative Studies and the Faculty of Fine Arts and Design which were opened in the 2001-2002 academic year. Associations, clubs, and similar foundations created by Galatasaray Lycée Alumni have undertaken positive tasks in their own fields and are still carrying them on. However, with regards to Galatasaray University, Galatasaray Educational Foundation set up by a group of Galatasaray Alumnae in 1981 and presided by ?nan K?raç should be mentioned, especially, in terms of the importance given to education and the projects put forward. Founded with the aim of overriding the constraints on educational targets and needs of Galatasaray Lycée which was, initially, dependent on just the budgetary possibilities of the Ministery of Education, this foundation, has been successfully achieving the proposed target in the commencement article since its foundation.

Founded by Turkish Association of Health and Medical Treatment, Fatih University officially opened at the inauguration ceremony attended by ex-President Süleyman Demirel on 18 November 1996. Fatih University is administered by a Board of Trustees having 15 Members. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences, The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Engineering Faculties, Institutes of Sciences and Social Sciences and School of Vocational Studies are located in Istanbul while the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Vocational School of Medical Studies, and School of Vocational Studies are in Ankara.

Atatürk University’s history is one of the dreams that came true for the Republic of Turkey. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, spoke about the necessity of establishing a large university in Eastern Anatolia at his Grand National Assembly inauguration speech on 1st November 1937 and also gave instructions for the start of the proceedings. After the death of Atatürk a break was taken from these proceedings for twelve years until when in 1950 this issue was put back on the agenda.

With its past dating back for centuries, Harran University receives its name from the historical town of Harran which is situated 44 km. southeast of the city of ?anl?urfa. University of Harran is known to be one of the first universities of the world and of the most important centers in history where many world-famous zcholars had studied. After a period of one thousand year, on 9th July 1992, University of Harran was reestablished, winning back its glorius place in history.

Mu?la University was established in 1992 as a state university with four proposed faculties, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences, Faculty of Technical Education and Faculty of Aquaculture and Fisheries. Mu?la School of Management, which was founded in 1975 as the first higher education institution in Mu?la and had been the part of Ankara Academy of Economics and Administrative Sciences and then ?zmir Dokuz Eylül University, was tied to Mu?la University on its establishment.

Established in 1996, Isik University is the pride of the deeply rooted education tradition of a 122-year old foundation called Feyziye Mektepleri Vakf?. This foundation started education under the name Feyz-i S?byan Mektebi, on December 14, 1885 in Salonika and has witnessed an era starting from the days of Ottoman Empire through the foundation of the Turkish Republic, and Ataturk's reforms and revolutions. The school got its name, I??k Lisesi, with the approval of Atatürk, who himself was a student of ?emsi Efendi Mektebi, one of the Feyziye Foundation schools.
