In September 1998, a new Zhejiang University was established on the basis of the amalgamation of the four former individual universities, namely Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University, which were all located in the garden city of Hangzhou. Approved by the State Council, the founding of the new Zhejiang University has been a significant move in the reform and development of China's higher education. The four universities have grown out of the same ancestry, the Qiushi (with the literal meaning of "seeking truth" in Chinese) Academy, which was founded a century ago as one of the earliest institutions of higher learning in China. As a result, they have all inherited from it the spirit of "Qiushi" and at the same time, built up their own distinctive features in teaching and research.

Situated on several former royal gardens of the Qing Dynasty, surrounded by a few historical sites in northwest Beijing, is the campus of Tsinghua University. The garden-like landscape, with the Wanquan River meandering through, has inspired and motivated generations of students. Tsinghua University was established in 1911 originally as "Tsinghua Xuetang," a preparatory school for students who would be sent by the government to study in universities in the United States. The school was renamed "Tsinghua School" in 1912. The university section was instituted in 1925 and undergraduate students were then enrolled. Shandong University is one of the oldest and prestigious universities in China . Shandong University was founded in 1901 and is the second national university established soon after Jingshi University (the Metropolitan University ) in the country. Recently, the Ministry of Education approved the university as a ¡°national key comprehensive university.¡± In 2001, it was listed among the 21 national key construction first-class universities by the Ministry of Education. Situated in Jinan , capital city of Shandong Province , Shandong University covers an area of 3.849 square kilometers. The province is located on the east coastal part of China and the lower reach of Yellow River . Not only is it one of the most economically developed coastal provinces in China , but also a major contributor to the ancient Chinese culture¡ªthe auspicious birthplace of Qilu culture.

Wuhan University is a key university directly under the administration of the Education Ministry of the People's Republic of China. It is located in Hubei Province's capital Wuhan known as "The thoroughfare leading to nine provinces". The university has rolling physical features with the scenic Luojia Hill in it and the beautiful East Lake by its side, seeming in picturesque disorder. Its campus is wooded and green, and has fragrant flowers everywhere all the year round, the buildings are in special architectural styles, magnificent and mansion-looking. Nanjing University, one of China's key comprehensive universities under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education, dates from 1902 when it was known as Sanjiang Normal School. During the following decades, it evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, the Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. On August 8, 1949, National Central University was renamed National Nanjing University. In October 1950, as required by the Ministry of Education, the name was changed to Nanjing University (NJU). In 1952, due to the nationwide restructuring of colleges and universities, some academic units such as the School of Engineering and the School of Agriculture were separated from the university; meanwhile, it merged with the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Sciences of the University of Nanking founded in 1888. Its name remained while its campus moved from Sipailou to Gulou.

Xiamen University was founded in 1921 by Tan Kah Kee, the well-known patriotic overseas Chinese leader. It was the first university in China founded by an overseas Chinese. At present it is the only university in any of five special economic zones and is one of China 's higher-level universities designated for the state key construction of the ¡°211 Project¡± and the ¡°985 Project¡±. Currently, Professor Zhu Chongshi is the President of the University and Professor Zhu Zhiwen is the Chairman of the University Council.

Renmin University (RUC, also known as the People's University of China) is a key university in China. The RUC's strengths emphasize the humanities and social sciences, however, the university also embraces disciplines in the area of natural sciences. The RUC is a comprehensive research-orientated university.In this new century the RUC has further outlined its goals, principles and schemata for running the university. Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) was founded in 1920. From its beginning, HIT has received the preferential support from the government. In 1954, the Ministry of Higher Education designated, for the first time, six national key universities. HIT was the only one of the six outside of Beijing. In 1984, HIT again found its way onto the list of 15 national key universities to receive special support. In 1996, HIT was in the first batch of universities to be included in Project 211. This project targets 100 institutions of higher education in China to receive preferential support for development in becoming world-class universities in the 21st century. In 1999, HIT was listed as one of the top nine key universities in China. This distinction provided HIT with the opportunity to develop into a world-class, first-rate competitive university with the assistance of the Ministry of Education and the Heilongjiang Provincial Government.

Southeast University (SEU) is one of the national key universities administered directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is also one of the first universities accredited by the State Council to determine and approve the qualifications of professors, associate professors and doctorial supervisors. It is also one of the universities of ¡°Project 211¡± and ¡°985 Program¡± that is financed by the central government to build as a world-class university. Southeast University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China. Its origins can be traced back to 1902, when it was founded as Sanjiang Normal College. Then, it evolved as: Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University and National Central University. During the nationwide restructuring of institutions of higher learning in 1952, Nanjing Institute of Technology was established on the original site of National Central University. In May 1988, the university was renamed Southeast University. And in April 2000, Nanjing Railway Medical College, Nanjing College of Communications and Nanjing Geological School were merged into the university, whose main campus is located at the center of the ancient capital city of Nanjing, a sacred place for education since the Ming Dynasty. At present, Southeast University has five campuses, covering a total area of 155 hectares, with a built-up area of 886000 square meters.

Tongji University is one of the leading universities directly under the State Ministry of Education in China. It offers degree programs both at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university has School of Sciences, School of Architecture and Urban Planning, School of Civil Engineering , Mechanical School, School of Environmental Science and Engineering. The history of Tongji University can be traced back to 1907 when Tongji German Medical School was founded by Erich Paulun, a German doctor in Shanghai. The name Tongji suggests cooperating by riding the same boat. The school was expanded to include engineering in its programs and got its new name as Tongji Medical and Engineering School in 1912.

The new HUST was established on May 26, 2000 after merging with the former HUST, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. It is a key university directly under the leadership of the Ministry of Education. It is one of the first group universities listed in the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". HUST ranks at the top of China's leading universities in comprehensive strength . In the University, there are eleven faculties including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, agriculture, science, engineering, medicine and management. It offers a variety of programs, including 75 undergraduate programs, 200 Master's programs, 139 doctoral programs and 22 post-doctoral research centers. It has 4 national leading laboratories, 4 national engineering research centers and 12 leading laboratories with ministerial or provincial level. It has more than 13,000 staff members, of whom 16 are academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences & the Chinese Academy of Engineering, over 600 are doctoral supervisors and more than 900 are professors. Peking University Health Science Library was first established in 1922, and its new building was opened in 1989, occupying 10,200 square meters with over 1,000 seats available. Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC) is located on Xueyuan Rd. in Haidian District, a cultural area with many universities. It is in the center of the well-known Zhong Guan Cun Hi-Tech Zone. PUHSC is a well-structured, multi-disciplined, and comprehensive medical education institution with a long history .

Jilin University (JLU) is a leading national university under the direct jurisdiction of China's Ministry of Education. Located in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province in Northeastern China, the University has eight campuses in five districts which are home to thirty-nine colleges covering eleven academic disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, literature, education, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, and management. The University boasts sixteen disciplinary areas,five national key laboratories, and eight national bases for the development of basic science. Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) is a key university under the direct administration of the Education Ministry by the authority of the State Council, P.R. China. It is one of the first universities in China awarded the title of ¡°State 211 Project Key University¡±. WHUT is located in Wuhan, a city renowned as "the Thoroughfare Leading to Nine Provinces". The university occupies an area of nearly 4,600mu, with the total build-up area of 1.6 million square meters. There are 4 modern libraries with a total stock of more than 3.5 million books. The university covers studies in engineering, natural sciences, humanities, management, economics, law, philosophy, history, education and medicine. There are 79 specialties for undergraduates, 2 first class national key subjects, 7 second class national key subjects, 30 ministerial or provincial-level subjects, 9 first-class doctoral programs, 61 second-class doctoral programs, 132 second-class master degree programs and 10 post-doctoral mobile stations. The university has the authority to confer master degrees in 21 fields such as Engineering, MBA, MPA, MFA, etc and confer master degrees on teachers working at the universities and colleges in 16 fields. The university has already established a group of research centers at advanced levels, including a national key laboratory, and a state level industrial testing base, 17 key laboratories and research centers at ministerial or provincial level and 58 joint centers with prominent enterprises at home and abroad.

Central South University (CSU) is a comprehensive and national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education in China. CSU was established in April, 2000 on the basis of the amalgamation of the three former individual universities, namely Central South University of Technology, Hunan Medical University and Changsha Railway University. CSU is situated in Changsha, Hunan. Prof. Li Jian is secretary of the Communist Party of China's CSU Committee, and Prof.Huang Boyun, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, is president of CSU. The fields of study at CSU cover 10 branches of learning, namely engineering, science, medicine, management, literature, law, economics, philosophy, education and history. The university now offers 75 undergraduate programs, 242 master's programs and 102 doctoral programs. It has 22 postdoctoral exchange centers, 17 national key disciplines, 4 national key laboratories, 7 national or ministry-level key training or research centers and 5 national talent training bases and research bases. Among its faculty members, there are 3 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 12 academicians of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 574 doctoral supervisors, more than 898 full professors and more than 1985 associate professors. At present, the total number of full-time students at CSU has reached more than 50,000, including more than 15,700 graduates working for master's and doctoral degrees, more than 33,000 undergraduates, more than 408 overseas students and about 12,000 students taking courses in degree and non-degree programs of adult education.

South China Normal University (SCNU) is a member of Project 211 (one of the top 100 universities in China in the 21st century). It's a comprehensive university featured distinctively by both teaching and research, consisting of diverse branches of learning such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, technology, and management. As early as 1933, the Teachers' College of Guangdong Provincial Xiangqin University, the predecessor of SCNU, was established by Mr. Lin Liru, a contemporary educationist, serving as the vice Minister of Education(MOE) and then the president of Beijing Normal University for several terms after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It was later developed as an independent Guangdong Provincial College of Liberal Arts and Science, together with National Zhongshan (Sun Yat Sen) University, which were the two most prestigious universities in Guangdong province at that time. In 1951, South China Normal College was founded with the merging of the Teachers' College of Zhongshan University and the Education Department of the South China United University . In 1952, the Education Department of Lingnan University, the Russian department of Nanfang University , and several universities in central and southern China were also merged into the college in the readjustment of the universities in the whole country. Famous educationalists like Du Guoxiang, Chen Weishi, Wang Yanshi and Ma Xiaoyun served as the deans. In 1978, the college was approved as a key provincial college in Guangdong . In October 1982, South China Normal College formally changed its name to South China Normal University .

Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is located in the beautiful coastal city of Dalian, in northeastern China's Liaoning Province. A national ¡°211 project¡± key university co-built by the Henan Provincial Government and the State Ministry of Education On July 10th, 2000, the new Zhengzhou University was founded through the merger of three universities: Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou University of Technology and Henan Medical University. It is a comprehensive university with 11 disciplines: science, technology, art, medicine, literature, history, philosophy, law, economics, management, agriculture and education, and the only one of the national ¡°211 project¡± universities in Henan Province under the administration of both the Henan Provincial Government and the State Ministry of Education, P.R.C. Zhengzhou University has an abundance of resources. The University now has four main campuses, namely, New Campus, South Campus, Technological Institute and Medical School, occupying an area of 1070 acres (6493 mu), of which the New Campus (located in New High-tech Zone) comprises 799 acres (4845 mu). Construction of the New Campus has a construction budget of 1.97 billion RMB and a total construction area of 1.651 million square meters.

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) was founded in Yan¡¯an in 1940. BIT is a national key university, an open, international and research-oriented university of science, engineering and humanities with science and engineering as the focus. It is one of the first universities to run a graduate school and receive privileged fund from the central government in ¡°the 7th, 8th and 9th Five Year Plan.¡± BIT is also one of the national ¡°Project 211¡± universities receiving preferential support from the state. The University of Science and Technology Beijing (USTB), founded in 1952, is a national key university under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Education of China . USTB is famous for its study of metallurgy and material science. While engineering is the focus, there are also programs in basic science, management, humanities, economics and law. USTB is one of the 33 Universities in China that are entitled to establish state-approved graduate schools. In 1997,USTB was listed as one of the first group of universities admitted to China 's ??211 Project??, i.e to be built up into one of the 100 first rate universities in 21 century.

This is a university that has gone through great changes and difficulties. In 1952, Beijing College of Geology was founded by merging the departments and sections of geology of some famous colleges and universities namely Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tianjin University, and Tangshan Railway Institute, etc. Then, in 1970, the college was moved out of Beijing, trudging through difficulties: passing Shimen, crossing Dan River, going south to Jiangling, dwelling in Jingzhou. It was running the education of talents while selecting a proper place to settle down. At last, in 1975, the college settled in Wuhan and was renamed Wuhan College of Geology. From then on, the college started its reconstruction while maintaining its education.

Founded in the early 1980s, Shantou University's mission is to nurture an aspiring, knowledgeable, determined, and promising elites. Fuzhou University is located in the historic city, Fuzhou, in Fujian Province which is situated along the southeast coast of China. The University occupies two compact purpose-built campuses. The old campus is at the western part of Fuzhou City, neighboring the famous Xichan Temple and the picturesque Minjiang River. Watching old campus from the other side of Minjiang River, the new campus is built at the foot of Qi Mountain of Shangjie District, Minhou County of Fuzhou City.

Located in Shanghai, the gathering place for the talented people and the heterogeneous cultures, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), initially named East China Institute of Chemical Technology, was founded in 1952. It was the first single-subject chemical institute in China through the joint consolidation of the chemical departments from Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Utopia University, Soochow University and Jiangnan University during a nation-wide restructuring of the country¡¯s higher education resource in the early 1950¡¯s. As one of the universities that were initially granted the permission to admit postgraduates in 1956, ECUST was promoted as a national key university under the direct administration of the Ministry of Education in 1960. In recognition of its growth, the National Ministry of Education approved the renaming of the University as the East China University of Science and Technology in 1993.

Nanjing Normal University is located in Nanjing, the ancient capital of six dynasties in history. It is a key university of Jiangsu Province and one of the 211 Project institutions. Its history can be traced back to Sanjiang Normal School established in 1902. It was since then operated under a series of names including Liangjiang Excellent Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, Southeast University, Central University, and Nanjing University. Another source came from Huiwen institute set up in 1888, which developed into the private Jinling University, merged Jinling Women’s College of Arts and Sciences (once under the name of the Private Jinling Women’s University) and became the National Jinling University. In 1952 when the Chinese institutions of higher learning underwent a nationwide reorganization, Nanjing Teachers’ College came into being with departments from Nanjing University, Jinling University and a number of other institutions. It became Nanjing Normal University in January, 1984, and merged Nanjing Advanced College of Dynamics in March, 2000. The university provides programs in various areas such as liberal arts, history, philosophy, education, science, engineering, economics, law and public administration.

Northwestern Polytechnical University is China¡¯s only research-oriented, multi-disciplinary, and international university of science and technology, which simultaneously excels at Aeronautics, Astronautics, and Marine Engineering. The University emphasizes science and technology, while harmoniously developing the fields of management, humanities, economics, and law. The predecessors of Northwestern Polytechnical University were the State Northwestern Engineering College (formed by Beiyang Engineering College, Engineering College of Peking University, Engineering College of Northeast University and Jiaozuo Engineering College in 1938), and Huadong Aeronautical College (formed by the Aeronautical Engineering Department of Jiaotong University, Aeronautical Engineering Department of Nanjing University, and Aeronautical Engineering Department of Zhejiang University in 1952). State Northwestern Engineering College and Huadong Aeronautical College joined to become the Northwestern Polytechnical University in 1957. In 1970 the Air Force Engineering Department of Harbin Military Engineering College was merged into NPU. During the ¡°Seventh Five-year Plan¡±(1986-1990) and the ¡°Eighth Five-year Plan¡± (1991-1995), NPU was one of the 15 universities for key construction by the State Council. In the ¡°Ninth Five-year Plan¡± (1996-2000) period, it was one of the first universities to be funded by Project 211, and it was one of the national key constructions of Project 985 during the ¡°Tenth Five-year Plan¡± (2001-2005). It is also one of the first Chinese universities that have set up Graduate Schools and University Science Parks.

Founded in 1948, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law (ZUEL) is located in Wuhan, a metropolis of Central China. It is an institution of higher education under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China with economics, law, and management as its core disciplines. These are coordinated with the development of eight other disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, engineering, etc. ZUEL is also one of the universities sponsored by “211 project”, which is the Chinese government's new endeavor aimed at strengthening about 100 institutions of higher education and key disciplinary areas as a national priority for the 21st century.

Xidian University is among an elite class of institutes for higher education selected nationally as part of China's State educational development project labeled "211". Xidian is a key national university dedicated primarily to electronic technology and information which is integrated with a wide range of academic subjects including engineering, physical science, social science, foreign languages and business management. In many years since Xidian University was founded 68 years ago, it has grown rapidly in both size and prestige. Now it has become a base of education and high-tech research in the field of electronic information. Xidian University is organized into eight schools: Telecommunications, Electronic Engineering, Computing, Technical Physics, Mechno-Electronic, Management, Science, and Humanities. Xidian has established a College for Continuing Education and a Graduate School for postgraduate studies. It offers over 23 specialties for undergraduates and postgraduates.

Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) was founded in 1958 and is affiliated to the Ministry of Education. As one of China's key institutions of higher learning, BUCT has developed from an institution of scientific specialties to a comprehensive university with a core curriculum of science, economic management, languages and other liberal arts. The university, covering an area of 64.4 hectares, is composed of three campuses. The main campus is conveniently located on the eastern section of the North Third Ring Road, southeast of the Asian Games Village, with a quiet and attractive environment. The west campus near the Shangri-La Hotel enjoys an advantageous location on the central section of the West Third Ring Road, and the north campus is near the Ming Tombs, a famous scenic spot.

Henan University is located in Kaifeng, a famous historic city and the capital of 7 dynasties in Chinese history. It was founded in 1912 and was originally named The Preparatory School for Further Study in Europe and America. Afterwards it was renamed Zhongzhou University (1923), Henan Zhongshan University (1927), Henan Provincial University (1930), and Henan National University (1942). By the end of the 1940s, it had developed into an influential comprehensive university with 6 schools, namely, School of Art, School of Science, School of Law, School of Agriculture, School of Engineering and School of Medicine. With the nationwide reorganization of universities and departments in 1953, the university was renamed Henan Teachers College (1953),Kaifeng Teachers College (1956) and Henan Teachers University (1979). The name - Henan University was restored in May, 1984.

Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) was founded at Shanhaiguan in 1896, named then Imperial Chinese Railway College. It is one of the oldest universities in China majoring in engineering. In 1905, it was moved to Tangshan, Hebei Province, and was renamed Tangshan Jiaotong University, Tangshan Railway Institute, and so on. In 1972, the university was removed to Emei, Sichuan province, and began to use its present name-Southwest Jiaotong University. In 1989, it was moved to Chengdu, and in 2002, the construction of a new campus covering an area of over 3,000 mu was started in Chengdu. With this, a new pattern of ¡° one university, in two places, with three campuses¡± is coming into being.
